Favorite memories of my brother Samson

Gloria Bellware

Even as a toddler of two, my younger brother, Samson, lived life with gusto and tirelessly explored the world around him.  Consequently he constantly wore a bump on his forehead, a bruise on his knee or a cut somewhere.

He could not sit still for more than five minutes.  He gave new meaning to the saying, “Children should be seen not heard.”  Often when we had visitors to our home, Samson would ride his tricycle and zoom around where the adults were sitting.  He did not make much noise but you could definitely see him.

He did not say much but he always had a smile on his face and a little laugh when you  talked with him.

He loved sports and anything that is round – soccer, basketball, ping pong and bowling.

One day I heard someone announcing a soccer match – in the house.  It was Samson.  He had created a soccer game out of paper and he was passing the “ball” and scoring at goals that were made out of paper as well.  I was really impressed with his creativity.

Once around age eleven, Samson really wanted a popsicle so he went to the store to get one for everyone in the family.  Then he delivered everyone’s choices first before he started to enjoy his own.  Alas, the popsicle had melted and it slipped out of the stick and the paper sleeve and plunged three stories to the pavement below.    He looked up just in time to see the store closed for the night.  Even though he was visibly disappointed, he saw the irony of the situation and chuckled through unshed tears.  What a sense of humor and servant’s heart Samson possessed!

One of Samson’s favorite things was our family outings to the New Territories where he could run and climb.  He had always loved the great outdoors.

At age seventeen Samson was the only child left at home because both Paul, my older brother, and I went to the United States to study abroad.  I had no idea how lonely he felt.  It was during this time period that he painted, wrote poems and did other things to fill the loneliness and void he felt.  Nothing really filled him until he turned to God and sought Him. He discovered the power in Psalms 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God”.

Just before he turned thirty he gifted me with a devotional and penned 1Corinthians 2:9-10 in it.  Little did he know how much I needed that in the years to come.

My brother, Samson, he is like the mountain that he so loved.  It stands tall, visible, steady and strong.  It is a statement of quiet strength and might.  It displays the splendor and magnificence of God.

On looking back I can see how God had prepared Samson for the work He had for him.  Samson poured himself into working with young people to bring them to God.  He introduced them to God as they hiked in the mountains.  He planted the seeds in faith and nurtured them with love.

I thank God for gifting me with Samson, a loyal brother, and to our family a devoted son, a faithful husband and loving father.  He is our joy.  We love him and will all miss him.

To My Dear Uncle Samson

Kimminiece

Uncle Samson, how lucky I am to have you as my family!  Always gentle and kind, you showed me the way we are to be: loving, humble, happy, caring and faithful.  There is no one better at making me see the joy in our world, because you lived every day entirely grateful of God’s earth and his blessings.

We did so many things togethercamping at Yellowstone, hiking around Hong Kong or photographing on vacation.  I was grateful that you shared the love and respect for nature with me, leaving me with good memories of our time spent together.

You also showed me how to be playful, even as a grown up.  From your example I learned how being constantly curious and amazed at the world keeps one young.  Your consistent happiness I now realize is something special and entirely unique.  It reflects the beautiful heart God gave you to share with others.

As a faithful and cheerful servant, you celebrated your faith and provided me with an encouraging example.  You put your trust and your life in God’s hands, leading family and friends in the same way.  For that I am especially grateful; I know I will see you again.

And while you set an outstanding example, what I miss most is your laugh.  It was a laughter only you could make.  Along with your smile, your prayers and your hugs, every time I saw you, I was able to hear your funny and happy laugh—the laugh of someone, my uncle, who knew the very best of life.

I will love, miss, and remember you, Uncle Samson.
